La Carreta Salvadorian Food is a straightforward Salvadoran restaurant tucked along Van Nuys Blvd in a busy Van Nuys neighborhood. The spot is best known for serving authentic Salvadoran dishes made fresh to order, including staples like pupusas, carne asada, and their standout regional specialties such as chilate con nuegados and plátano con miel. It draws in locals who appreciate genuine flavors over polished presentation.

The setting is unpretentious and functional rather than trendy, with a casual, no-frills vibe where efficiency matters. Seating is limited and the place tends to get busy around typical meal times, so a bit of a wait isn’t unusual—calling ahead to order is a smart move if you want to avoid that. Parking can be tricky: there’s some space behind the building and street parking nearby, but those spots fill quickly when the restaurant gets crowded.

People who come here value the food’s authenticity and portion size more than ambiance or fancy service. The staff, while sometimes curt during peak hours, generally get orders out promptly. The menu leans heavily into Salvadoran comfort food with options like grilled meats, soups, and seafood dishes alongside classic pupusas. The salpicón and seafood preparations get nods for staying true to traditional tastes, though some diners suggest asking for extras like lime on the side to brighten up certain dishes.

If you’re looking to try Salvadoran cuisine in a relaxed, straightforward environment, La Carreta serves well-prepared meals that highlight the hearty, comforting nature of this cuisine. It fits well into the diverse tapestry of Van Nuys, catering mostly to locals who prioritize authentic, home-style cooking over atmosphere. Visiting earlier in the day or ordering ahead can make the experience smoother, especially if you want to avoid a rush.

Only place I have found to make authentic Salvadorian food the right way. Always clean and well worth the wait time for the freshest meals.

Authentic food in a low-key setting. The ropa vieja with plantains is delicious and filling. Staff is efficient and polite. Parking is limited, but worth it for the food. A nice find in the city

Hey, ive been to this restaurant a couple times for pupusas which were good. Today, I've had the chicken and beef soup which were delicious. My mom which is picky about Hispanic food from restaurants said it was delicious and had great portions. We also had salpicon was good but needed more lime but they had on the side which was great. The service was great compared to these other reviews (people are too sensitive ). I will be a repeat customer, thanks La Carreta.

Was highly recommended by a co worker this is my place to go for popusas in the valley. I agree the lady in the front is a bit grumpy at times. But I take home all the time to avoid that problem. Recomend to order by phone 15-25 min before pick up just because sometimes it gets a bit busy an might take longer than usual. Prices are fare for the food quality you get don't expect cheap for good quality food.

Good spot for pupusas, pupusas are a bit small but have good flavor and are made to order. Staff are friendly, and attentive(when not busy I must say). Place does get busy at times and there is a wait. Parking lot in the back of establishment or street parking available. Prices are okay for the portions of food.
